The government has ordered an upgrade to aviation security measures, integrating all agencies to intensify crew inspections, prevent drug trafficking, and uphold safety standards and confidence in Thai aviation operations.
On 2 July 2026, Ms. Lalida Pertwiwatthana, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the government prioritizes maintaining aviation safety standards and the country's image. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn assigned Deputy Minister of Transport Phattharaphong Phattharapisit to follow up on the case of a Thai airline crew member arrested by Australian authorities after drugs were found in their luggage. He also ordered the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to coordinate with all relevant agencies to enhance measures preventing similar incidents from recurring.
Ms. Lalida stated that preliminary information indicates the crew member was operating a flight from Thailand to Melbourne, Australia, on 25 June 2026, where authorities at the destination inspected and discovered drugs concealed in the luggage. The case is currently undergoing Australia's judicial process.
Ms. Lalida explained that all crew members currently must undergo security screening comparable to passengers. Although there are special channels for operational convenience, both personnel and luggage are screened according to international standards. Airport security inspections focus on preventing dangerous items, weapons, and explosives that could threaten aircraft safety. Detection of drugs or other illegal items is conducted in coordination with relevant agencies such as Customs and drug enforcement units.
Ms. Lalida added that the Deputy Minister of Transport has instructed the CAAT to invite Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, airlines, Customs, and drug enforcement agencies to establish additional measures. These include tightening controls on crew luggage check-in and carry-on items, upgrading information sharing among agencies, and enhancing intelligence coordination to improve risk detection. The goal is to balance maintaining safety standards with facilitating passengers, ensuring public services and travel are not disrupted.
"The government will continue to advance aviation security measures through integrated cooperation among all relevant agencies to prevent illegal activities, build confidence in Thailand's aviation system, and uphold internationally recognized safety standards while appropriately facilitating passengers," she concluded.
