The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand's State Enterprise Labor Union (EGAT Union) explained its letter of consultation submitted to MP Atthawit Suwanpakdee, affirming support for actions that benefit EGAT, the nation, and the public, emphasizing it is not a tool of any individual or group.
On 4 July 2026, reporters reported that Mr. Narenrit Saadwong, Chairman of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand State Enterprise Labor Union, signed a statement on 3 July regarding the case in which the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand State Enterprise Labor Union (EGAT Union) had submitted a letter to Mr. Atthawit Suwanpakdee, Member of Parliament (MP) from the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party's party-list, concerning remarks made to the media describing EGAT as a 'captive tiger...' and during discussions, Mr. Atthawit explained that by 'captive tiger' he meant EGAT is like a tiger chained and unable to hunt, and that the chains should be removed to allow EGAT to increase its production share to 51 percent. The EGAT Union agreed this aligned with its policy goals and expressed support for anything beneficial to EGAT, the nation, and the people, deciding to proceed as shown in media images of raised hands (read more: ‘Atthawit’ joins hands with ‘EGAT Union’ to reduce ERC power and curb private monopolies)
Additionally, in the discussion, Mr. Atthawit mentioned proposing the use of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) principle to cover electricity costs. The EGAT Union views this as a government policy but insists it must not affect investment budgets, liquidity, or other operations. Nevertheless, the issue should be addressed properly regarding who should bear which costs.
Mr. Atthawit also referred to changing the role of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The EGAT Union commented that the ERC originates from the state and is established by law, so it is the responsibility of the state and legislature to act. The union has no authority in this matter and focuses on monitoring the country's Power Development Plan (PDP), which will indicate whether EGAT's share increases or private monopolies remain.
However, the EGAT Union concluded that it continues to monitor policy ideas and supports anything beneficial to EGAT, the nation, and the people, and emphasizes that the union is not a tool of any individual or group and continues to follow various issues.
