Ekniti revealed that the government is awaiting the Constitutional Court's decision on the 400 billion baht loan decree, emphasizing that the government must proceed with the energy transition due to economic security concerns. He disclosed that if the ruling is negative, the government will accelerate partnerships with the private sector to overcome the challenges, especially as delays could further weaken Thailand's economy.
On 6 Jul 2026 at the Government House, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas gave an interview regarding the Constitutional Court's upcoming ruling on the decree authorizing the Ministry of Finance to borrow up to 400 billion baht to address impacts from the energy crisis and to support the country's energy transition in 2026. He said the decision depends on the court’s judges. The government’s best course is to clarify accurate and complete information, stressing the necessity due to Thailand's heavy energy dependence. This issue is a matter of economic security as the country relies heavily on oil, reflected in the current account deficit mainly caused by rising oil prices. The uncertainty over whether the war will end or reignite has significantly damaged global energy infrastructure, keeping global gasoline and diesel prices high.
When asked if there is a contingency plan if the court's ruling is unfavorable to the government, Ekniti said that today all sectors must be involved. The key plan underway for energy transition is to collaborate with the private sector through the Joint Public-Private Committee (JPC).
Asked again if there is a backup plan in case of a negative ruling, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated that cooperation with the private sector will be used to advance the transition. The budget used will accelerate the process. Thailand could wait for the transition, but waiting would further weaken the Thai economy, especially as global oil prices remain high and the country must continue importing in a fragile economic structure.
Regarding projects proposed for support under the loan decree, Ekniti said there have been some discussions about energy transition projects focused on clean energy.(Solar power)Additionally, there is a plan to transition vehicle energy use, especially in transport, from diesel dependence to biodiesel biomass energy derived from palm, sugarcane, and sugar. This will have the added benefit of increasing farmers’ incomes.
Ekniti said he has decided to launch a personal Facebook page, “Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas,” to explain the overall economic picture and hopes all parties will cooperate. He is ready to listen to both positive and negative feedback and invites everyone to follow updates on the page.
