Supamas Seizes Deadly Weight Loss Drugs Without FDA Approval Valued Over 3 Million Baht

"Supamas" joined the Office of Consumer Protection, police, and FDA to raid a deadly weight loss drug warehouse lacking FDA approval, seizing over 10,000 items worth more than 3 million baht, following a female consumer's death after using the product.

On 7 July 2026, Ms. Supamas Isarapakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office overseeing the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP), along with Mr. Pradermchai Boonchuaileu, Ministerial Advisor, and Mr. Ronarak Phoolpipat, Secretary-General of OCP, held a press conference on the raid of the "Bashi" weight loss product manufacturing site. They were joined by Police General Samran Nualma, Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, and Pharmacist Suphattra Boonserm, Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), at a warehouse in Soi Tadon, Bang Ma Nang Subdistrict, Bang Yai District, Nonthaburi Province, after officials searched two nearby manufacturing and storage sites.

Ms. Supamas said the government integrates all sectors to seriously advance consumer protection efforts, following Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's direction. She ordered the OCP to work closely with the Consumer Protection Police Division, Metropolitan Police Bureau, and FDA to crack down on hazardous health products, especially those sold online, which are easily accessible but hard to monitor. At the 4/2026 Consumer Protection Committee meeting yesterday (6 July 2026), the committee discussed the death of a consumer after taking "Bashi" supplements and assigned the FDA to strictly monitor advertising and sales of these products, leading to police investigations tracing the production source today.

This operation originated from the case of a female consumer who died in February 2026 after taking "Bashi" weight loss products ordered online. The Metropolitan Police Bureau's Investigation Division, together with FDA officials, conducted an investigation that led to the execution of a search warrant from Nonthaburi Provincial Court around 09:00 a.m. at a warehouse in Soi Tadon, Bang Ma Nang Subdistrict, Bang Yai District, and extended to another nearby warehouse used for production. The searches uncovered complete production machinery such as raw material mixers, capsule fillers, capsule cleaners, automatic sachet fillers, shrink wrap machines, and printers for production and expiration dates. They found both mixed and unmixed raw materials, empty capsules, finished "Bashi" bottled products ready for sale, "Lishou Fuling Jiaonang" products, and labels for both brands. In total, 45 items amounting to about 10,000 pieces valued at approximately 3 million baht were seized. Three foreign nationals overseeing the site were taken for further questioning.

Both brands lack food registration numbers, and the FDA has previously issued warnings that these are illegal products due to detected illicit addition of sibutramine, a Schedule 1 psychoactive substance dangerous to the cardiovascular system and potentially fatal. The OCP has compiled complaint facts and scheduled mediation on 13 July 2026 to compensate the victim's family, while investigating online sellers under the Direct Sales and Direct Marketing Act B.E. 2545 (2002). They are coordinating with platforms to block related stores and stand ready to assist victims' families in claiming damages from producers and sellers under the Product Liability Act B.E. 2551 (2008), which does not require proving the operator's fault.

"This loss must never happen again. I have instructed the OCP to fully support the victim's family with legal rights and compensation, scheduling mediation on 13 July. I thank the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Consumer Protection Police Division, and the FDA for their joint efforts tracing back to the production source. Today, we are not only arresting sellers but cutting the supply chain from the production origin," Ms. Supamas said.

Ms. Supamas concluded that dietary supplements are a critical issue as they are ingested directly into the body; contamination with harmful substances can be life-threatening. She warned the public to always check for FDA food registration numbers and verify them before purchasing any supplements. Weight loss pills must be medically supervised, purchased only from authorized healthcare facilities, and prescribed by doctors. Online purchases of such medicines are strictly forbidden. Losing weight is not worth risking your life or that of your loved ones. If anyone encounters suspicious product sales, report immediately to the OCP. Every tip can save lives.

Consumers who have been harmed or have information about the sale of dangerous products can file complaints via the OCP hotline at 1166, the OCPB Connect application, the website ocpb.go.th, any Damrongtham centers nationwide, or the FDA hotline at 1556.
