Prime Minister Orders Swift Action to Manage Oil Prices, Ease Public Burden, and Advance Thailands OECD Membership

Ratchada revealed that the Prime Minister has ordered urgent management of oil prices to reduce the burden on citizens and businesses after global crude oil prices have continuously declined, while also pushing forward Thailand's membership in the OECD.

On 7 July 2026, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, disclosed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul spoke at a Cabinet meeting about the oil price situation, stating that over the past one to two weeks, tensions in the Middle East have begun to ease, leading to a continuous decline in global crude oil prices. He assigned the Ministry of Energy and the Oil Fuel Fund Office to closely monitor the situation and consider ways to adjust domestic retail oil prices in line with costs. The Prime Minister emphasized that if conditions allow, action should be expedited so that the public and businesses fairly benefit, helping to reduce living expenses and transportation and production costs, which will positively impact the overall national economy.

The Prime Minister also stated that on 6 July, he held discussions with representatives from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and European ambassadors, who praised Thailand's development direction in both economy and tourism and affirmed their full support for Thailand's OECD membership bid, reflecting international confidence in Thailand's potential. At today’s Cabinet meeting, key agenda items related to advancing OECD membership were considered, including appointing a supervisory committee for the membership process and drafting agreements between the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) and the OECD to expedite progress according to the planned schedule.

The government spokesperson added that the Prime Minister said joining the OECD is not just about elevating the country's status internationally but is also a crucial mechanism to raise public administration standards, update laws to international norms, enhance the country's credibility, and boost investor confidence worldwide. He urged all relevant agencies to fully drive the implementation of the plan and integrate cooperation across sectors so Thailand can achieve OECD membership within the set timeframe.
