The Political Stronghold of the Liangprasit Family in Satun Province: From Uncle to Nephew

Tracing the political trajectory before becoming the dominant family in Satun, the Liangprasit clan faces disruption after a National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) case implicates "Samrit" and "Somkiat," uncle and father of Minister Warasit.

On 7 July 2026 GMT+7, the Liangprasit family, a political powerhouse in Satun Province, encountered a fresh political storm after the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) decided to charge Samrit Liangprasit, President of the Satun Provincial Administrative Organization, and associates with misconduct. The case concerns their failure to terminate a construction contract for a tourist service center in Khuan Don District, Satun, valued at 29.8 million baht in fiscal year 2016. The contractor, Kiatcharoenchai Construction Partnership, led to delayed project delivery. Despite this, Samrit approved a six-year contract extension and allowed the contractor to submit revised work plans repeatedly, none of which were completed on time, resulting in fines totaling 58,106,100 baht. Notably, Somkiat Liangprasit, a partner in the construction firm, is Samrit's younger brother and the father of Warasit Liangprasit, Deputy Minister of Interior. Samrit is Warasit’s uncle.

Tracing the lineage of the Liangprasit political stronghold.

The Liangprasit family. Their political journey began during Thaksin Shinawatra’s era when he founded the Thai Rak Thai Party. Narong Chidchob, Thaksin’s key aide, managed election campaigns in Satun and recruited Somkiat Liangprasit (nicknamed Go Kiatti), a local fisheries businessman, to help campaign in Satun’s constituencies 1 and 2. However, they failed to gain ground due to the Democratic Party’s strong support base.

Meanwhile, Samrit (Go Tien), Somkiat’s elder brother, had already entered local politics, serving three terms as mayor of Kamphaeng Subdistrict, La-ngu District, Satun. When Thanin Jaisamut, former president of Satun Provincial Administrative Organization, was disqualified from politics, Samrit ran for the position in 2009 and has won continuously, now serving his fifth term under the Satun Santitham group.

In the 2019 election, Narong identified Warasit Liangprasit (nicknamed Go Pae), Somkiat’s son, as a promising candidate and invited him to run for Satun MP in constituency 2 under the Bhumjaithai Party. Warasit defeated incumbent Hosali Mahem of the Democratic Party and retained his seat in 2023 and 2026 elections for a total of three terms, winning by large margins. In the second cabinet of Anutin Charnvirakul, Warasit was appointed Deputy Minister of Interior.Ministry of Interior. This ministry oversees key agencies such as the Department of Local Administration (DLA) and is part of a faction.Gang.Luk Thep, with Warasit known to have close ties to Chaiyanok Chidchob, Narong’s son, during his parliamentary tenure.

Worasit is considered a promising young politician, currently aged 37, holding an MSc in Business Management: International Business from Bournemouth University, UK. He is the son of Go Kiatti, Somkiat Liangprasit, owner of Kiatcharoenchai Partnership, which operates in fisheries, trucking, fish rafts, port services, construction, gas stations, palm plantations, and a Muay Thai gym named Kiatcharoenchai.

The Liangprasit family does not operate as a mere power group but maintains wide influence across all social levels in Satun. They have a clear political territorial division with Pipat Ratchakitprakarn’s family (nicknamed Go Kia) — Pipat controls Satun’s constituency 1, where his son Chonlat Ratchakitprakarn recently won election. Somkiat and Pipat are close friends, both directly connected to Narong.

Local sources say Samrit once considered retiring from politics after his current term due to age, but community demand persuaded him to continue running as Satun Provincial Administrative Organization president.

Sources further note that the electoral successes of Samrit and Warasit rely heavily on Somkiat’s strong grassroots work. As Satun is predominantly Muslim, winning local support is critical. At community or mosque events, Somkiat personally grills and distributes grilled fish to attendees to maintain strong ties.
