The government is upgrading regional airports, preparing to introduce the AFIS system for the first time in Thailand, piloting at Phrae and Phetchabun airports by 2028 to improve flight efficiency and support secondary city tourism.
On 10 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Lalida Perdiwattana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership, the government is advancing aviation infrastructure to accommodate growing travel and secondary city tourism. The Ministry of Transport has tasked the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. (AEROTHAI) to develop air traffic management and prepare to implement the Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) system for the first time in Thailand, aiming to enhance regional airport services and support future flight expansion.
The Deputy Spokesperson explained that the AFIS system provides flight information services within airport zones using technology and automation. It is suitable for airports with low flight volumes, improving airspace management efficiency, reducing manpower needs, and raising aviation service standards. The plan is to pilot the system first at Phrae and Phetchabun airports by 2028 before expanding to other regional airports as appropriate.
Ms. Lalida stated the government also prioritizes developing regional airports as key drivers to stimulate the economy and tourism, especially Phitsanulok Province, which has the potential to serve as a gateway to the lower northern region, linking travel to Sukhothai, Phetchabun, Uttaradit, and Tak provinces. Upgrading air traffic management systems and adopting modern technology will enhance travel efficiency, distribute income to regions, and support the government's tourism promotion policies.
Currently, Phitsanulok Airport averages 1,838 flights per month, with 62% military and 38% civilian flights. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. is preparing systems, equipment, and personnel to support flight volume growth and long-term aviation infrastructure development.
“The government is advancing air transport infrastructure alongside adopting new technologies to enhance safety and service efficiency, connecting secondary cities with major tourist destinations, distributing economic opportunities to regions, and strengthening Thailand’s role as a regional transportation hub,” she said.
