The government continues Thailand's role in ASEAN by hosting the ASEAN-Myanmar Foreign Ministers Meeting on 12 July, providing a constructive platform for dialogue with Myanmar and reaffirming support for the Five-Point Consensus to promote peace and regional stability.
On 11 July 2026, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that following Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's official visit to Malaysia, where he discussed economic cooperation, security, and border development with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the government will maintain an active foreign policy role. Thailand will host an informal meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar's foreign minister on Sunday, 12 July 2026, in Bangkok, with the Philippines chairing the meeting.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will host a dinner honoring ASEAN foreign ministers and representatives attending the meeting. This reflects Thailand's role in promoting cooperation within the ASEAN framework and encouraging positive developments in Myanmar, especially following the elections earlier this year, to support peace and stability in Myanmar.
The spokesperson stated that after Myanmar formed its new government in April 2026, ASEAN members recognized that the context has changed and agreed to adjust their approach accordingly. Thailand proposed a calibrated re-engagement strategy—gradual interaction with Myanmar under clear conditions—to open dialogue channels, build understanding, and support concrete implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus agreed upon by ASEAN leaders in 2021, which includes:
1. Immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar.
2. Constructive dialogue among all relevant parties to find peaceful solutions.
3. The ASEAN special envoy will facilitate dialogue processes with support from the ASEAN Secretary-General.
4. ASEAN will provide humanitarian assistance through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management.
5. The special envoy and delegation will visit Myanmar to meet all relevant parties.
Ms. Ratchada said this informal meeting is the first forum for dialogue between ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar's foreign minister since the Myanmar coup. It is expected to help promote overall regional stability, which is a crucial foundation for continuing cooperation in security, trade, investment, and tourism, benefiting Thailand and ASEAN members in the long term.
“The government affirms it will pursue a constructive foreign policy based on ASEAN principles and mechanisms, while safeguarding national interests, to support peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.”
