Abhisit urges the government to investigate flood relief appeals from residents in Hat Yai and Songkhla, requesting business loan relaxation to prepare before the principal and interest moratorium policies expire.
At 15:20 on 12 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, revealed after a party MP seminar in Hat Yai district, Songkhla province, that the morning session involved gathering proposals from various sectors in Songkhla to address flood problems. He noted that Hat Yai’s issues have been politicized unnecessarily. However, after the Prime Minister and relevant ministers visited the area and approved a central budget of 99.5 million baht and proposed addressing the R.1 canal issue to the Cabinet, Abhisit urged the government not to stop there because more problems remain. From the seminar, it was proposed that the government restore damages since many residents are still appealing for relief.
Abhisit added he wants the government to accelerate support, especially for businesses’ credit. He urged consideration of easing financial institution loan disbursement and the suspension of interest payments, which are set to expire, as well as the principal moratorium ending in six months. He requested the government use data from the Bank of Thailand to monitor assistance. Furthermore, he called for preparation to prevent flooding in areas still needing funds for canal dredging and replacement equipment damaged by the floods, amounting to about 300 million baht—an urgent matter beyond the already approved 99.5 million baht. The government should prepare and communicate evacuation plans and shelter locations managed by local and private sectors but currently lacking a lead agency. He suggested the province take the lead to build public confidence and understanding among residents.
Abhisit continued that proposals for future flood prevention in Songkhla and Hat Yai include upgrading roads, railways, repairing and reinforcing retention basins, and developing Songkhla Lake, pending a clear government plan. There are also proposals to develop new potential urban centers, especially in higher areas to become new economic hubs for wellness businesses, food, and technology industries. Strict enforcement of water and city zoning plans that all parties must genuinely follow was also emphasized. The party will present and monitor solutions, focusing on public reassurance that past hardships will not recur, without political motives. The seminar, themed “Southern Sky, Clear Sky, Together,” reaffirmed the party as a reliable hope capable of building the South’s future. However, unity is essential to move forward together. The Democrat Party will continue holding seminars in other areas.
