Prasert Teams Up with Dairy Farmers to Expand School Milk Quota to Grade 9

Supporting farmers and empowering youth, Prasert teams up with dairy farmers aiming to expand the 'school milk' quota to grade 9 and proposes the Cabinet resolve the milk surplus problem.

On 14 July 2026, Mr. Prasert Chantraruangthong, Minister of Education, met with dairy farmers and dairy cooperatives nationwide who came to submit a letter to the Prime Minister seeking solutions to the surplus raw milk market and school milk stockpiles. The farmer group presented four key proposals: expanding the school milk quota to cover from kindergarten through grade 9; increasing student milk consumption days from 260 to 365 per year; blocking powdered milk imports; accelerating resolution of unpaid raw milk debts by operators; and improving labels to clearly distinguish fresh cow's milk from processed milk.

Mr. Prasert stated that the Ministry of Education is ready to act on the farmers’ proposals, especially those involving the ministry, such as allocating the surplus raw milk stock to junior high school students. Initially, there is a high possibility to expand the school milk program to include junior high students to help clear the surplus and alleviate farmers’ difficulties.

Regarding increasing milk consumption days to 365, Mr. Prasert said he would promptly discuss this with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to prepare a proposal for the Cabinet meeting to reach a concrete decision.
