Prime Minister Anutin revealed the outcome of his discussions with Xi Jinping, who volunteered to mediate the Thai-Cambodian border issues. He clarified that the tank deliveries were from an old purchase order and affirmed that they do not affect national security.
At 17:00 on 17 Jul 2026 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, which is one hour ahead of Thailand, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul gave an interview about attending the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future.” The event was attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, leaders and senior representatives from many countries, international organizations, business sectors, and academia. Thailand had the opportunity to share its vision alongside many leaders, agreeing that in this technological era, all countries must seek cooperation because artificial intelligence (AI) can be highly beneficial but can also cause significant harm.
Therefore, all leaders agreed on the necessity to govern AI under principles of good governance, using it solely for the benefit of humanity. Importantly, they supported using AI to combat those who misuse the technology illegally or cause harm.
“Xi Jinping” volunteers as mediator
The Prime Minister said that during bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government honored the Thai delegation highly. They reaffirmed the strong relationship between the two countries, with China committed to continuous support and cooperation with Thailand in various areas including security, economy, technology transfer, and joint personnel training.
A key discussion point was regional relations and security issues. President Xi Jinping spoke about neighboring countries’ relations and offered to facilitate restoring good ties and seeking joint solutions. Thailand emphasized its position of not seeking conflict but needing to protect sovereignty and public safety. They also discussed openly the matter of military equipment deliveries, especially tanks from China to Cambodia. China explained understanding Thailand's concerns but noted the orders were placed long before conflicts began. During the fighting, China delayed deliveries due to sensitivities but ultimately had to fulfill contracts. However, China assured that conditions were agreed upon to prevent using such equipment to harm Thailand.
Taking over hosting the Mekong-Lancang cooperation meeting
Prime Minister Anutin added that President Xi Jinping mentioned the Mekong-Lancang cooperation meeting, which Thailand was originally to co-chair. To avoid discomfort for members, especially Cambodia, in traveling to Thailand, China offered to host the meeting instead to ensure the process continues smoothly.
Conveying the royal message
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Chinese authorities for their warm welcome of Thailand's Head of State. He also presented a royal message from His Majesty the King, inviting President Xi Jinping and his wife to undertake an official State Visit to Thailand. President Xi promised that when both sides’ schedules are convenient, he will accept the invitation.
Pushing investment beyond one trillion baht
Regarding trade, investment, and the economy, Prime Minister Anutin viewed this trip to China as very auspicious. The delegation visited the Board of Investment (BOI) office in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, accompanied by over 150 Thai businessmen seeking opportunities and partnerships. Currently, BOI’s Thailand FastPass program has significantly reduced procedures, leading to investment inflows into Thailand reaching one trillion baht since early this year. This marks a new milestone, bringing Thailand back onto the global investment radar.
Supporting Thai private sector business negotiations
When asked about bringing the largest number of Thai businesspeople on this trip, Prime Minister Anutin said he did not want it to be seen as simply bringing a group along, but that these entrepreneurs recognize growth opportunities. If there were no benefits, they would not have traveled. The participation of over 100 Thai private sector representatives shows readiness and strength in seeking partnerships and business negotiations. The Cabinet and government stand fully behind them to support and facilitate everything legally to create new opportunities for investors.
