Prime Minister Anutin revealed the results of talks with Xi Jinping, who volunteered to help resolve the Thai-Cambodian border issues and clarified the tank delivery matter, noting the order was placed long before any conflict or fighting occurred.
On 17 July 2026 at 17:00 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China (one hour ahead of Thailand). Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Chanvirakul gave an interview about attending the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future,” which featured President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China. Along with leaders and high-level representatives from many countries, international organizations, the business sector, and academia. At this forum, Thailand had the opportunity to share its vision alongside many leaders, agreeing that in the technology era, all countries must seek cooperation since artificial intelligence (AI) can be highly beneficial but also potentially cause massive harm.
Therefore, all leaders agreed on the necessity to govern AI under principles of good governance, using it solely for the benefit of humanity. Importantly, they also supported using AI to combat those who misuse the technology illegally or cause damage.
The Prime Minister said that in bilateral talks with Xi Jinping, the Chinese government honored the Thai delegation highly. They reiterated the strong ties between the two countries. China confirmed its ongoing support and cooperation with Thailand in various areas including security, economy, technology transfer, and joint personnel training.
At the same time, a key discussion point was regional security and relations. President Xi spoke about relations with neighboring countries and offered to facilitate restoring good relations and seeking a joint solution. Thailand emphasized its position of not seeking conflict but needing to protect sovereignty and citizen safety.
Additionally, there was frank discussion at the negotiation table about the delivery of military equipment, especially tanks from China to Cambodia. China acknowledged the Thai government and public's concerns but explained that the order was placed long before any conflict or fighting. During the fighting, China was aware of sensitivities and delayed deliveries but ultimately had to honor the contract. Nonetheless, China assured that agreements were made to ensure these weapons will not be used to harm Thailand.
The Prime Minister further said that President Xi mentioned the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation meeting, for which Thailand was originally to co-host. To avoid discomfort among member states, especially Cambodia traveling to Thailand, China offered to host instead so the cooperation could proceed smoothly.
The Prime Minister revealed that on this occasion, he thanked the Chinese authorities for their gracious reception of Thailand's Head of State. He also delivered a royal message from His Majesty the King inviting President Xi Jinping and his wife to make an official State Visit to Thailand. President Xi accepted in principle and said he would follow through when both sides' schedules permit.
