The Deputy Government Spokesperson explained that the government has extended the grace period for workers of three nationalities until 2027 to maintain economic stability and reduce labor shortages. Without this extension, there could be a direct impact on Thai employers.
On 19 July 2026, Lieutenant Colonel Phatdarasmi Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Government Spokesperson at the Prime Minister's Office, revealed details of the Cabinet resolution from 14 July approving the extension of the grace period allowing foreign workers from Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam to remain temporarily in the kingdom and continue working until 11 December 2027. This aims to support the economy and reduce labor shortages in industry and services.
Originally, most foreign workers' work permits were due to expire by the end of 2026. Without an extension, this could directly affect Thai employers relying on these workers across manufacturing, construction, service, and agricultural sectors nationwide, especially in industrial areas and key tourist provinces. If these workers leave the system, it would threaten economic stability amid high labor demand.
The Deputy Government Spokesperson stated the government proactively implemented this measure before many foreign workers’ permits expired to prevent labor shortages, enabling the private sector to plan workforce management continuously without production halts or temporary closures. During this grace period, relevant agencies will expedite updating foreign worker databases using digital technology to connect systems, ensuring workers remain legally registered, reducing illegal immigration and undocumented labor. This also helps businesses maintain their workforce without pressure from international labor standards.
He emphasized that the government is not opening new general registrations but only extending the grace period for workers already registered in the system to ensure continuous employment. Next, the Ministry of Labor will issue announcements detailing procedures to simplify and speed up documentation. Employers and businesses are urged to follow official announcements on the Department of Employment website (www.doe.go.th) and the Ministry of Labor hotline at 1506, press 2, to avoid being scammed by fraudsters claiming to collect fees.
