"Pholpeer" is reforming the electricity rate structure by locking the price of the first 200 units at no more than 3 baht per unit, warning that those charging more will face consequences.
On 20 July 2026 at the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) headquarters, Mr. Pholpeer Suwannachavee, Deputy Minister of Interior, chaired a press conference announcing the reform of household electricity rates for 2026–2030. The aim is to reduce living costs and enhance fairness, following the policy of Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The event was attended by Mr. Mongkol Treekitchanan, Governor of PEA, and Mr. Dichawat Chan-ii, Governor of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).
Mr. Pholpeer revealed that the Ministry of Interior has tasked PEA and MEA with promptly developing a new electricity rate structure in line with the National Energy Policy Committee’s resolutions. The measure sets the rate for the first 200 units at no more than 3 baht per unit. The definition of electricity users will be reviewed to include residents of dormitories, apartments, rental houses, and temporary registered residences, so they qualify for the same rates as homeowners. Operators are required to charge fairly.
Vulnerable groups registered with the electricity authorities will receive support of up to 315 baht per month per household. If usage exceeds 315 baht, the user must pay the full excess amount that month. Additionally, government funds will be allocated to subsidize public electricity costs, which average around 0.09 baht per unit on household bills, further easing the burden on the public.
However, tenants in dormitories or apartments who find that operators charge electricity rates above those set by the government can report tips via the Damrongtham Hotline 1567, the Citizen Service Center 1111, or the Consumer Protection Hotline 1166. Officials will be sent to inspect immediately.
The governors of PEA and MEA confirmed their readiness to implement the electricity rate reforms according to government policy. The reforms will begin in August 2026 and will be reflected in reduced electricity bills starting from the September 2026 billing cycle.
