Sophon warned society that if we want to see a democracy that works in practice, we must break free from the trap of conflict, entrusting the nation's future to the younger generation.
On 24 July 2026, Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the Parliament and the House of Representatives, presided over the opening of the 2026 Youth Citizenship Promotion Project in democracy. The event, titled "Youth Gathering for Citizenship Building," marked the 25th anniversary of Youth Democracy, featuring a keynote speech "Youth Power and the Development of Democracy in the New Era." Over 400 youth democracy representatives from four regions nationwide attended at the Parliament building.
Sophon said in his speech that today’s youth are tomorrow’s adults. Democracy is government of the people, by the people, for the people. Yet, it is crucial to first preserve the nation and sovereignty to maintain a country for us to live in. Regardless of the system of government, the ultimate goal is citizens’ happiness. He wants to see a "sustainable democracy" that can be put into real practice—not just daydreaming—and judged by actions rather than words.
The Speaker emphasized that differing opinions are normal but must be debated rationally in parliament, not relying solely on majority votes. However, if persuasion fails and a vote is necessary, the result must be accepted. Currently, the country remains trapped in this issue, with losing sides refusing to accept decisions, perpetuating conflict. He urged preserving the good legacy of ancestors and condemned those who dehumanize others or create class divisions, stressing that every human life holds equal value.
On this occasion, Nattasak Sarika, the 2023 Youth Democracy representative from Phichit province, submitted a legislative proposal to foster aware citizenship, highlighting drug problems as a structural crisis impacting lives, families, and public property. Sophon noted that this issue has been a priority he has continually advanced and will continue to do so.
Following this, the Speaker presented certificates of honor to exemplary youth democrats across various fields to encourage the building of a network of aware youth committed to driving sustainable democracy forward.
