The government announced good news that skilled Thai researchers have successfully produced a botulinum antitoxin, reducing the cost from 250,000 baht to 25,000 baht per dose. This enhances drug security and advances Thailand's goal to become a regional antitoxin hub in ASEAN.
On 28 Jul 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Ploytale Laksamee Sangchan, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed that the government, through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Ministry of Public Health, has registered the modern drug formula TRCS BOTULINUM ANTITOXIN. This antitoxin counters botulinum toxin caused by consuming canned bamboo shoots. Previously, Thailand had no such antitoxin and had to import it. Producing this antitoxin domestically marks an important step toward sustainable national drug security and significantly reduces costs—from about 250,000 baht per dose down to approximately 25,000 baht, a tenfold decrease.
Ms. Ploytale stated this success resulted from cooperation among multiple agencies: the Thai Red Cross Society, Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, Biological Products Institute, National Vaccine Institute, Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO), and the National Health Security Office (NHSO). Their collaboration aims to incorporate the drug into Thailand’s health benefits system in the future. This reflects Thailand’s capability to transform knowledge and research into practical products and exemplifies effective coordination among research, innovation, production, regulatory, and health benefit sectors.
“The registered TRCS Botulinum Antitoxin is produced not for profit but to support and strengthen the nation’s drug security. It demonstrates Thailand’s ability to manufacture essential drugs independently without relying solely on imports. Although botulism is rare, it is extremely serious and can cause death from muscle weakness and respiratory failure. This antitoxin is crucial for saving lives, especially in emergencies or bioterrorism cases. Having domestic production allows faster patient access to treatment and elevates national drug security. This achievement ensures equitable access to life-saving medication for Thai patients and establishes Thailand as a regional drug security center ready to assist and collaborate with neighboring countries on public health security.” Ms. Ploytale added.
