“Aekniti” points out “ Government Savings Bond AomPlus ” will help solve a key structural issue of the country. Investment starts at just 100 baht with a maximum interest rate of 2.80% per year. He revealed that the first sale on the Paotang app, with a total value of 2 billion baht, sold out in 21 seconds.
On 31 Jul 2026, Mr. Aekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, posted on Facebook about the “Government Savings Bond AomPlus,” which the Ministry of Finance launched for sale today. He said it’s not just a new savings product but a tool to address an important structural challenge of the country.
First, let me explain why this is necessary.
1. Today, many Thais still have savings insufficient to cover six months of essential expenses, while household debt remains above 86% of GDP, ranking among the highest in the region.
2. Looking at the country overall, the figures align: Thailand’s savings rate has steadily declined from 27.7% of GDP in 2014 to only 25.3% of GDP recently.
3. More importantly, Thailand is rapidly entering a fully aged society. Currently, 53 provinces have elderly populations exceeding 20%, yet many seniors lack sufficient financial security. Without promoting savings now, this may impact the nation’s fiscal and financial systems in the medium to long term.
This is a three-layered vulnerability—from households, the national level, to demographic structure. Our challenge is not just “how to get people to start saving,” but “how to save continuously, effectively, and grow savings into investments,” because in the modern world, income alone is no longer enough.
The “Government Savings Bond AomPlus” offers an accessible new option for saving and investing to the public, with fixed interest rates of 1.80% per year for 3-year terms and 2.80% per year for 10-year terms. Investors gain “plus” benefits beyond traditional savings:
• “Plus” monthly availability — sold every month for easy and inclusive access (Financial Inclusion).
• “Plus” returns — attractive interest rates.
• “Plus” secondary market — a market mechanism supports transparent and true price reflection for buying and selling.
• “Plus” distribution channels — increased availability through the Government Savings Bank wallet, commercial banks, securities firms, and Streaming apps. The public can start investing from 100 baht via the Government Savings Bank wallet on the Paotang app or choose to subscribe through banks, securities firms, and Streaming apps starting at 1,000 baht (small lot first via Bond Connect Platform), allowing investors to pick options suited to their savings and convenience.
The point I want to emphasize is that “AomPlus” addresses not only small investors but also national challenges on three levels:
1) Household level — promotes disciplined, regular monthly saving with returns better than standard deposits, connects to real investment portfolios, and serves as the first step toward retirement security, which is increasingly important as many Thai seniors lack financial cushions.
2) Capital market level — a transparent and liquid secondary market upgrades Thailand’s capital market infrastructure, linking traditional savings bonds to a Digital Investment Ecosystem, supporting the goal of reversing the continuous decade-long decline in the nation’s savings rate in this year of investment.
3) Fiscal and demographic level — expanding the domestic saving base is part of diversifying government funding tools. This not only aids public debt stability but also prepares the country to face an aging society arriving faster than many expect. The more the working-age population has stable long-term savings tools today, the lighter the future fiscal burden will be. This aligns with the 5T framework I adhere to: using fiscal tools with clear goals and discipline alongside long-term sustainability.
“The best saving is not a single large deposit but regular saving over the long term. As I write this Facebook post, I have received reports from the Director of the Government Savings Bank that the first batch sold today via the Paotang app (first come, first serve) with a total of 2 billion baht was fully sold out within 21 seconds! For those who missed out today, be ready for the next round from 3-5 August with a minimum of 1,000 baht, prioritizing retail investors (small lot first) through the Bond Connect Platform. Sales will continue monthly thereafter. For more details: https://www.setinvestnow.com/th/bondconnect-selling-agent. Thanks to the Public Debt Management Office, Bank of Thailand, SEC, SET, banks, securities firms, and all agencies involved in making this happen.”
