The government has raised its alert level to monitor water conditions, ordering preparations for continuous rain throughout August. Heavy machinery has been deployed to risk points, and shelters have been set up to provide timely assistance to residents 24 hours a day.
5 August 2026 GMT+7 Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmit Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government is deeply concerned for the people regarding the ongoing rain situation throughout August. Relevant agencies have therefore intensified coordinated efforts to proactively manage water and stand ready to assist the public around the clock. Water management plans are executed through the Smart Water Operations Center (SWOC), which monitors rainfall and water conditions in real time.
Current data shows that large and medium reservoirs nationwide hold approximately 43 billion cubic meters of water, about 57% of capacity, still able to accommodate over 33 billion cubic meters of runoff. The Royal Irrigation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will manage water levels in balance with rainfall in each area to handle floodwaters during the rainy season, while preserving water reserves for the dry season.
Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmit stated that the Meteorological Department forecasts increasing rainfall from 3-10 August. The government has therefore prepared at the highest level in advance by deploying water pumps, water propulsion machines, and heavy equipment to high-risk riverbank and lowland areas. They will closely monitor water conditions 24 hours a day and stand ready to assist the public immediately should emergencies arise.
Additionally, rainfall increases influenced by China must be closely watched, especially from 6-8 August, when heavy to very heavy rain is expected in the upper northern region, posing risks of flash floods and forest runoff in the Sai and Nan river basins. The government has instructed upstream provinces such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, and Sukhothai to coordinate with local universities to prepare temporary shelters to maximize public safety.
