On 5 August 2026, Mr. Sihasak Puangketkaew, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, commented on the disturbance at Suvarnabhumi Airport involving Chinese tourists and Thai officials. Chinese tourists were barred from boarding flights, and Thai officials were seen in photos allegedly bullying the tourists. He said, “We want their arrival and stay to be a positive experience from arrival, during their stay, to their departure. Immigration-related matters must follow regulations because there are rules, but we should also facilitate smooth processes.”
Regarding the possibility of helping Chinese tourists better understand Thailand’s regulations, Mr. Sihasak stated that it is the responsibility of the Chinese embassy in Thailand. He noted that several incidents have sparked public concern among Thais. He told the ambassador that this is a sensitive issue requiring clarification, not just defending Chinese interests. Understanding must be fostered.
“Because an ambassador’s main duty in Thailand is to promote international relations and foster good understanding among peoples. Their statements must consider this responsibility, not add to these controversies. I have explained this to the ambassador, and he understands. Sometimes he defends, but the duty of the Chinese ambassador to Thailand and the Thai ambassador to China is to maintain good relations between the two countries.”
