The Deputy Minister of Interior ordered the governor of Surat Thani to investigate foreigners threatening and assaulting Thais, declaring a firm refusal to allow any influence above the law to bully Thai people.
On 5 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Worasit Liangprasith, Deputy Minister of Interior (MoI.4), disclosed receiving complaints that Thai citizens on Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province, were threatened and physically assaulted by foreigners, causing widespread social concern. He urgently instructed the provincial governor and the Koh Samui district chief to immediately investigate the facts on-site and coordinate with relevant agencies to reassure the public.
Mr. Worasit emphasized that the Ministry of Interior will not overlook incidents affecting the safety of Thai people. If any law violations are found, regardless of nationality or status, perpetrators will be prosecuted strictly and equally. He also ordered administrative officials to comprehensively inspect related businesses, land use, property ownership, labor employment, and licenses to ensure transparency and build confidence among law-abiding tourists.
“Thailand welcomes tourists and honest investors, but we will not allow anyone to use influence, violence, or power above the law to instill fear among Thai citizens. The Ministry of Interior’s duty is to make people feel safe and supported. When Thais are in distress, we must stand by them,” Mr. Worasit said.
The Deputy Minister of Interior further urged governors and district chiefs in major tourist areas nationwide to closely monitor and track situations. They must assist citizens immediately if incidents occur and promptly report on the Koh Samui investigation. Should legal loopholes be identified, swift measures will be taken to prevent recurrence.
