Sihasak revealed that the agenda for talks with Min Aung Hlaing highlights tackling scammers, drug trafficking, and pollution in the Kok River, supports peace in Myanmar, and welcomes the ICRC’s meeting with Suu Kyi as a positive sign for the political climate in the country.
At 11:50 a.m. on 5 Aug 2026 at the Government House, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Puangketkaew spoke about Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s upcoming visit to Thailand on 6 Aug and the topics to be discussed. He said there will be two parts: issues concerning Thailand and Myanmar bilaterally, especially border matters. Thailand wants the border to be free of conflict and seeks cooperation to combat scammers and drug trafficking. Importantly, there will be signing of a Terms of Reference to establish a joint working group to manage pollution in the border rivers, especially the Kok River, which is a crucial issue. Another focus is revitalizing border trade, which is significant to the private sector.
Asked about the situation in Myanmar, Sihasak said Thailand hopes Myanmar will advance the peace process and talks with ethnic minorities. If there are areas where Thailand can help facilitate, it is willing to do so. Another point is that Thailand welcomes the progress seen as Myanmar allowed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi. This reassures the international community that the former State Counsellor and civilian government leader is being cared for and is in good health. There is hope she will be released one day, but this remains Myanmar’s internal matter. Nonetheless, this development is positive for improving Myanmar’s internal political atmosphere.
