The government has ordered an investigation into universities irregularly admitting foreign students, requiring checks on all programs and visa application routes to close loopholes that may impact Thai higher education standards and prevent misuse. Authorities stress immediate legal proceedings if violations are detected.
On 6 August 2026, Captain Phatdarasmi Thongsaluaykong, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that following media concerns about certain universities possibly irregularly admitting foreign students and doubts about visa processes, the government has responded promptly. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Yotsanan Wongsawat, has instructed the Ministry's Office of the Permanent Secretary to thoroughly verify the facts to preserve the credibility and standards of Thailand's higher education system.
The investigation will summon the involved universities to provide explanations, especially regarding foreign student admissions and all types of programs, including degree and non-degree courses. It will also examine the student visa application process from course registration through to visa submission to prevent misuse and exploitation of legal loopholes.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office stated that the investigation will be conducted strictly and without discrimination to close any loopholes that could be exploited for personal gain or distort the education system's credibility. If any actions are found to violate laws, regulations, or established standards, the government will enforce the law decisively without exceptions.
