Senator Premsak proposes to the Prime Minister to dissolve the entire NBTC board and conduct a new selection, pointing out that the resolution declaring Dr. Sorn as NBTC chairman is disqualified and legally invalid.
At 10:55 a.m. on 6 August 2026, at the press room on the first floor of the Parliament building, Mr. Premsak Piyayura, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information Technology, Communications, and Telecommunications, held a press conference titled “The Solution for the NBTC.” He addressed the case where the selection committee for the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) resolved that Dr. Sorn Boonbaichayapruk, NBTC chairman, was disqualified. He stated this resolution is unlawful, citing, for example, that Mr. Kiattipong Amatayakul, Supreme Court representative, might be disqualified due to being over 70 years old on the voting date, and Mr. Witthai Ratanakorn, the new Governor of the Bank of Thailand who was not part of the original NBTC selection committee, also participated in the vote. This might invalidate the resolution. According to legal procedures, the NBTC selection committee’s authority ended after submitting names for Senate background checks and approval votes; it does not have permanent power to remove those it previously appointed after four years of service. Therefore, he proposed two solutions for the government and Prime Minister, who oversee the NBTC.
1. The matter should be submitted to the Senate for proper consideration and follow correct Senate procedures. The Senate President should not immediately forward the issue to the government for royal endorsement while the former NBTC chairman still has pending complaints in the administrative court. 2. He proposed that the Prime Minister "reset" by dissolving the entire NBTC board. If the problems remain unresolved and individual commissioners continue to have issues, the Prime Minister should consider dissolving all seven NBTC commissioners and initiate a new full selection process for the benefit of the nation.
