Thailand and Myanmar have signed a Terms of Reference (TOR) to establish a joint task force to address pollution in the Kok and Sai rivers after it affected residents in the border areas.
On 6 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Sihasak Puangketkaew, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, revealed that Thailand and Myanmar signed a TOR to set up a joint technical task force to tackle pollution in the Kok and Sai rivers, operating based on scientific data and cooperation between the two countries.
Following the establishment, the joint task force will hold meetings. Mr. Sihasak said he has discussed with Myanmar's Foreign Minister about conducting field visits to the affected areas to monitor the situation and consult with relevant agencies, with expectations that the joint visit will take place soon.
Additionally, Thailand and Myanmar discussed proposals to dredge the Sai and Luak rivers to help prevent flooding issues. Regarding transboundary haze problems, cooperation will be strengthened both bilaterally between Thailand and Myanmar and within the trilateral framework involving Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.
