On 7 August 2026 in Chiang Mai province, the Democrat Party (DP) held a political education project on democratic governance at the “Sai Fa Huam Jai Hom Hang Muang Nuea” event at the Wintree City Resort Chiang Mai hotel. Many party leaders, former MP candidates, and representatives from northern branch offices attended the event.
Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, spoke about the party’s direction in the northern region. Although the party had no constituency MPs in the north after the last election, leaders and members remain committed to serving the public, especially addressing key northern issues like PM 2.5 dust pollution, which requires systematic solutions rather than seasonal fixes that are soon forgotten. He also mentioned toxic substances in water sources impacting residents’ quality of life, linking this to foreign policy cooperation with neighboring countries and China. Furthermore, he emphasized promoting Chiang Mai’s and other northern cities’ cultural assets into economic value through creative economies and new technologies. He reaffirmed that the Democrat Party is seriously and straightforwardly scrutinizing the government, proposing alternative solutions such as the Land Bridge project, rebranded as Southern Connect, and warning the government about budget management and borrowing that must be systematic and legally compliant to avoid future fiscal traps.
Asked about the "three-color political equation," Abhisit replied briefly with a smile, saying to ask those involved with the three colors, as no one has discussed it with him. Regarding restoring the party’s popularity in the north, he said that although the number of MPs has declined due to the electoral system, the party aims to return as a major political option for the people. They must work harder to rebuild trust among former supporters and gain confidence from younger generations. It will take time, but they are ready to move forward because the Democrat Party is not a single-issue party. They want to be a viable option for the public and regain their position as a main party, but it requires time and effective action on issues important to the people, as they are not a party of convenience.
