People's Party MP explained shouting calls for peace during the welcoming ceremony of Min Aung Hlaing, emphasizing the need to take a stand against the bloodstained general.
On 7 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Anusorn Thamjaithai, MP of the People's Party (Pop Party), held a press conference about submitting demands to the Myanmar government to promote peace, democracy, and address cross-border issues after he vocally called for peace and humanity during the welcoming ceremony of General Min Aung Hlaing, leader of Myanmar's military government.
Anusorn said his actions aimed to benefit Thailand, Thai citizens, and Myanmar people suffering under authoritarian rule. He also acted to uphold the dignity of the Thai Parliament, demonstrating MPs' disagreement with the government or parliament welcoming a dictator and alleged war criminal on public grounds. While dialogue with Myanmar's military leader is possible, he said there was no need for a grand red carpet welcome.
Anusorn revealed he originally intended to submit a proposal letter to General Min Aung Hlaing, who became president through what he described as a staged and sham election. However, he was prevented from entering to hand over the letter due to being escorted out of the Senate ceremony. Therefore, he chose to shout slogans to publicly declare that the Thai Parliament stands for peace, democracy, and humanity.
“I feel saddened by the government and the Senate because the House of Representatives was not informed. Rolling out the red carpet for a bloodstained dictator who causes many problems for Thai people is unacceptable. If we have empathy for fellow humans, we cannot remain indifferent. We must show that Thailand supports peace and rejects war, violence, genocide, and bombing along border areas,” Anusorn said.
Anusorn concluded that the honorable welcome of Myanmar's coup leader at the Government House and Parliament represents the lowest point in Thailand's diplomatic strategy on the global stage. Opening the country to a leader condemned worldwide and under an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, while forging close relations despite the opposition of peace-loving Thai and ASEAN people, is a grave mistake for Thailand's international standing.
He added that he will continue pushing this issue by submitting parliamentary questions to the government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies, to find joint solutions, reduce cross-border impacts, and help restore peace and democracy in Myanmar.
