On 8 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas spoke about prioritizing the remaining funds from the 400 billion baht loan decree. With many projects requesting funds, including Thai Travel Thai Plus and energy transition initiatives, he confirmed that the remaining 200 billion baht will be dedicated to energy transition projects. Of the initial 200 billion baht tranche, about 40 billion baht remain. The Prime Minister has advised careful assessment before spending, emphasizing the need for cautious and targeted use of the limited budget. Ekniti stressed that energy transition is a key priority.
Regarding the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ plan to request 1.75 to 2 billion baht from the loan decree for the Thai Travel Thai Plus project, Ekniti said the requested amount is not large. He has advised that funds must be used strictly for their intended purpose to support vendors. He acknowledged that despite some remaining funds, budget use must align precisely with objectives to maximize benefits, similar to the Thai Help Thai Plus program.
In response to potential criticism that the Thai Travel Thai Plus project may not meet the urgent loan objectives if the economy improves, Ekniti emphasized that the situation will be evaluated carefully before decisions are made.
When asked if extending Thai Help Thai Plus Phase 2 could use the second 200 billion baht tranche meant for energy transition, Ekniti acknowledged that while legally permissible, he prefers to reserve those funds for energy transition. He stated that 50 to 60 billion baht would be allocated for energy transition projects like rooftop solar to assist citizens in adopting solar power, with financial institutions such as Government Savings Bank and Government Housing Bank providing loan support.
Ekniti also noted ongoing energy transition efforts, highlighting heavy reliance on oil and natural gas, especially for electricity generation and feed-in tariffs. He stressed the importance of upgrading to smart meters and enhancing transmission systems, emphasizing a holistic approach to avoid blackouts like those experienced in other countries despite clean energy initiatives.
Additionally, the government plans to transition public transportation by converting seven vehicle groups to electric vehicles, as these vehicles have long service lives. Details and budgeting for this plan are yet to be finalized.
Regarding discussions with the CEO and co-founder of Grab Holdings Limited (Singapore), Ekniti said the company expressed gratitude for participating in Thai Help Thai Plus, which uses AI technology similar to the NokKasib application. This technology has boosted vendor sales by over 68%, demonstrating that AI enhances vendor capabilities and income. He plans to engage further with the public and vendors to build on this success.
When asked whether the Thai Help Thai Plus project would immediately proceed to Phase 2 after concluding at the end of September, Ekniti stated that a thorough evaluation will be conducted before making a decision.
