On 13 August 2026 at the Government House, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul warmly received Mr. Elbridge Colby, U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, during his official visit to Thailand.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Thai government's stance that security cooperation is a fundamental pillar between the two countries, and Thailand does not use defense collaboration as a condition or bargaining tool in trade negotiations. Both areas proceed based on mutual benefits through dedicated mechanisms, as Thailand and the U.S. share a strategic partnership spanning 193 years. Both sides agreed to elevate security cooperation to align with the changing global context, focusing on developing military capabilities and modernization, expanding defense industry cooperation, and preparing to face new threats and challenges.
Meanwhile, Mr. Elbridge Colby stated that the U.S. attaches strategic importance to the region and is ready to cooperate with Thailand to maintain lasting peace and stability.
The Prime Minister mentioned discussions with FBI Director Chris Wray in July to enhance law enforcement and combat transnational crime in the region. He also expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for his constructive role regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation. Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully through bilateral mechanisms and compliance with the Kuala Lumpur Accords. Economically, Thailand reiterated its determination to promptly conclude the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the U.S. for the maximum benefit of both peoples.
