KPI Poll reveals public confidence in the efficiency of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), but doubts remain about their independence and transparency, with a strong call for audits of local budgets and infrastructure projects.
On 14 Aug 2026, the King Prajadhipok's Institute released the results of the 33rd KPI Poll titled “Public Perspectives on the Performance of the NACC and the OAG.” The survey was conducted nationwide from 7-10 Aug 2026 among 2,000 citizens aged 18 and over, with key findings as follows.
1. Which budget areas do you want the NACC and OAG to audit the most? (Survey by x Line Today)
• Among respondents, 31.5% most want audits of “municipal and local government projects,” followed closely by 27.8% who want audits of roads, railways, and government buildings.
• Next, 11.0% want audits of public aid and welfare budgets, 9.2% for energy, electricity, and water budgets, 9.0% for security and military budgets, 5.8% for IT systems and procurement, and 3.8% for hospital and school budgets. Meanwhile, 1.9% were unsure or had no opinion.
Combining the top two categories, 59.3%—more than half—prefer the NACC and OAG to monitor local budgets and infrastructure most closely. This reflects public expectations for scrutiny of projects and budgets affecting daily life and visible spending.
2. Ability to prevent and combat corruption is rated better than other aspects, but concerns remain about independence.
• For the NACC, the highest ratings at “high to very high” levels were for the ability to prevent and combat corruption (37.8%), while the lowest “high to very high” rating was for independence from political interference (21.6%). This independence aspect also received the highest “low to very low” rating (44.4%).
The public rates the NACC’s anti-corruption capability relatively well compared to other areas. However, building public confidence remains a key challenge. The NACC must not only deliver results but also ensure transparency, fairness, independence from political influence, and allow for oversight.
3. The OAG’s efficiency in auditing state finances leads other aspects, but independence remains a key challenge.
• For the OAG, the highest “high to very high” ratings were for efficiency, expertise, speed, and cost-effectiveness in auditing public funds (28.0%). The lowest “high to very high” rating was for independence from political interference (18.6%), and this also had the highest “low to very low” rating (49.2%), similar to the NACC.
Although the OAG’s audit efficiency is rated higher than other areas, most ratings are moderate. Independence, fairness, transparency, and communication remain significant public concerns. Therefore, building trust must go hand in hand with improving audit effectiveness.
The survey reflects that “independence, fairness, and transparency are critical to public trust.” While the public rates the core capabilities and efficiency of the NACC and OAG positively, aspects related to independence, fairness, transparency, and communication require urgent attention to build confidence. At the same time, there is an expectation for these agencies to prioritize projects and budgets that directly affect daily life, especially local and state infrastructure. Thus, beyond improving audit efficiency, both organizations should make their processes transparent, trackable, communicate clearly with the public, and demonstrate tangible results in protecting public interest.
