The Democrat Party urges the government to rigorously scrutinize "foreign capital and migrant workers" amid a cycle of job competition with Thai workers and wage suppression, cautioning against deep-pocketed investors monopolizing local businesses and causing loss of cultural identity.
On 16 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Weer Sriworathanaboon, Deputy Spokesperson of the Democrat Party, addressed the issue of impacts from foreign capital and migrant labor in Thailand. She noted growing public concerns about the influx of foreign capital and migrant workers clearly affecting the service and tourism sectors, such as restaurants and hotels. In some areas, service staff and managers are predominantly foreigners unable to communicate in Thai, raising the critical question of whether foreigners are displacing Thai workers.
Ms. Weer further explained that a deeper question is why Thai workers avoid certain jobs. While some allege Thais prefer comfort or reject low wages, the reality is that Thais seek decent income and quality working conditions, which is not unreasonable. Problems often stem from wage structures, working conditions, and insufficient incentives. At the same time, some employers—both Thai and foreign—choose migrant workers with lower bargaining power to cut costs. This practice is illegal and unethical, and when foreign investors do this, it severely harms Thailand by denying benefits from such investments to the country and its people.
The Democrat Party’s Deputy Spokesperson also called on relevant agencies to urgently implement strict oversight mechanisms focused on three main areas:
1. Verifying the source of foreign capital to ensure that incoming foreign investments are clean funds—not illegal money or those using Thai nominees as fronts.
2. Protecting local businesses by establishing government mechanisms to help small entrepreneurs and local communities compete effectively and benefit from foreign capital, technology, and international tourists, rather than allowing large investors to monopolize businesses and dominate the market.
3. Safeguarding cultural identity by urging the government and local administrative organizations to be attentive to cultural erosion. They must quickly implement measures to balance economic growth and tourism promotion without sacrificing the identity and welfare of local people.
