Bangkok organized an event to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Thai Peace Day. Anusorn Thamajai advocated for Thailand to adopt a proactive diplomatic policy, leading ASEAN to extinguish the conflict in Myanmar and prevent the country from becoming a proxy war battleground for great powers.
On 16 Aug 2026 GMT+7, reporters reported that Bangkok, together with the Pridi Banomyong Institute and allied networks, held a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of Thai Peace Day to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the Free Thai Movement under the leadership of Senior Statesman Pridi Banomyong, who declared peace after World War II, protecting Thailand's sovereignty and survival.
Sanan Wangsaungbun, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, opened the event by congratulating and thanking the Pridi Banomyong Institute for continuously organizing the commemorative activities. He emphasized that contemporary Thais benefit from the sacrifices of the Free Thai ancestors. Bangkok is ready to stand alongside and support ongoing activities that promote historical knowledge and understanding among youth and the public.
Anusorn Thamajai, MP from the People's Party, former chairman of the Pridi Banomyong Institute's executive board, and former vice-chairman of the Pridi Banomyong Foundation, delivered a lecture on current geopolitical tensions. He pointed out that the global order and multilateralism are severely shaken by great power policies and the use of veto rights in the United Nations Security Council, causing wars and crises in regions such as the Middle East and Iran, directly impacting global economies, living costs, and food security worldwide.
Anusorn further stated that Thailand and other developing countries cannot wait for aid or become tools in the power games of the United States or China. Thailand must pursue proactive diplomacy, cooperating with ASEAN neighbors to safeguard sovereignty and build sustainable peace.
He also expressed special concern over the situation in Myanmar, calling for Thailand to step up as ASEAN leader to implement concrete solutions to prevent Myanmar from becoming a proxy war battlefield for great powers, emphasizing adherence to the "five-point consensus" of ASEAN as the foundation to immediately halt violence against civilians and increase diplomatic pressure on the Myanmar government to accept the peace process, similar to Thailand's successful role during General Chatichai Choonhavan's government, which served as a central mediator in resolving Cambodia's conflict.
