The Speaker of the House has raised parliamentary security to the highest level, guaranteeing 100% that no MPs will be shot dead within parliament.
On 18 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke about security measures inside the parliament building after the Budget Committee expressed concerns about safety in the parliamentary chamber during the review of the 2027 fiscal year budget bill. He stated that the parliament now has strict security measures, and everyone visiting the parliament must comply fully. He recounted that he came to parliament out of habit avoiding the X-ray machine, but the parliamentary police insisted he go through the weapon screening, which made him feel very pleased as it showed a clear improvement in security measures.
Mr. Sophon emphasized that everyone entering the parliamentary area must follow the rules, including a ban on carrying firearms, and must wear identification badges. Anyone without a badge or unable to answer security questions will be asked to leave immediately.
When asked whether these standards apply to MPs as well, since some might claim privileges to avoid inspection, Mr. Sophon said to consider his own example. Police officers naturally show more respect to the Speaker than to MPs, but this time there was no staged scene. He sincerely praised the parliamentary police. He also improved staff discipline by strictly forbidding the acceptance of tips. Anyone carrying weapons must deposit or have them confiscated; absolutely no weapons are allowed inside, regardless of who the person is.
Additionally, as MPs often bring outsiders into their private offices, inspections have been tightened accordingly to prevent incidents without exception. He guarantees 100% that no MPs will be shot dead, alleviating the Budget Committee’s concerns about the 2027 budget. Although the parliament has many entrances and exits, the security system can cover all areas thoroughly.
