Akaniti Affirms Governments Readiness to Negotiate with Major Business Groups to Make Thailand a Regional Distribution Hub

Akaniti met with Thai nationals in New Zealand, affirming that the Thai government is pushing forward proactive negotiations aimed at attracting investment and enhancing the country's potential through cooperation in agricultural technology and clean energy. The government is also negotiating with major business group T&G Global to make Thailand a regional distribution hub.

On 22 Aug 2026 in Auckland, New Zealand, Mr. Akaniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, said during a meeting with the Thai community in New Zealand that this visit alongside the Prime Minister focuses on strengthening economic ties and attracting concrete investment. Discussions with New Zealand businessmen revealed significant foreign investor interest in Thailand, while Thai investors have proudly expanded their presence in New Zealand, including a 20% stake in premium honey company Comvita and ownership of leading hotels.

Mr. Akaniti added that the government’s policy is to turn energy and cost-of-living crises into opportunities by partnering with New Zealand to develop clean energy and modern technology. Given New Zealand's expertise in agriculture, Thailand will utilize cooperation in food science and post-harvest technology to increase the value of agricultural products and raise Thai farmers' incomes.

There are also plans to promote Thailand as a regional distribution center, especially for apples, leveraging partnerships with Thai business groups such as the Central Group, a major importer. Discussions with T&G Global have been held regarding investment in establishing a distribution center in Thailand.

Regarding transportation and tourism, Mr. Akaniti said the Prime Ministers of both countries have tasked officials to enhance cooperation under the Thailand-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. Efforts include accelerating the reopening of direct flights between Thailand and New Zealand to facilitate travel for businesspeople and the public. Coordination is underway with the Chairman of Thai Airways and the CEO of Auckland Airport to prepare and find optimal travel arrangements, considering convenient flight slots. Once Thai Airways acquires new aircraft, routes to New Zealand will be prioritized.

For human resource development, the government aims to transfer modern digital and technological skills to Thai people to support economic transformation. It also plans to promote Thai cultural strengths to New Zealanders to build strong ties in all dimensions. The main goal is to enhance quality of life and instill pride among Thais through innovation and global business ownership.
