The Prime Minister said the unrest at multiple points in the South is a retaliation by offenders after the government intensified asset seizures and crackdowns on illegal drugs and contraband goods.
On 23 August 2026, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnveerakul spoke about unrest in the three southern border provinces, saying he has received reports and held discussions with the Army, Internal Security Operations Command, and the Fourth Army Area commander to closely assess the situation. He believes the incidents are retaliatory actions by opponents because the government recently stepped up efforts to suppress lawbreakers through arrests, asset seizures, and thorough crackdowns on drugs and contraband goods like cigarettes. However, he affirmed that these actions have not caused discouragement or a change in approach; the government will continue its crackdown efforts fully.
Regarding intelligence matters, the Prime Minister explained that information has been continuously reported. This round of incidents focuses on causing disturbances and creating situations to signal a response to officials rather than targeting lives. Nevertheless, authorities will not allow these acts to alter their legal enforcement approach.
When asked about negotiation efforts, Anutin said that talks are still ongoing. In principle, violent incidents should not occur, but if the other side continues hostile acts, negotiations will be reconsidered. Meanwhile, protecting citizens’ lives and property and defending the country remain the government's and officials’ firm priorities.
