The Democrat Party has organized a team to prepare for debating against the 400 billion baht loan decree and is urging the Prime Minister to personally answer questions about unrest in the southern provinces.
On 25 August 2026, Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesperson for the Democrat Party, announced the results of the party's parliamentary meeting. The meeting selected three members of parliament to debate the 400 billion baht loan decree scheduled for the House of Representatives on 26 August. The team is led by Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, party leader and party-list MP, along with Mr. Korn Chatikavanij and Mr. Chaiyanat Detchadecho, party-list MPs and deputy party leaders.
The Democrat Party spokesperson said the debate will focus on showing that there is currently no economic crisis or urgent necessity requiring the government to issue the loan decree. Passing such a loan law would unnecessarily increase public debt, which is already near the ceiling. Although the party accepts the court's ruling that the government has the authority to borrow money, the opposition MPs will rigorously scrutinize and oppose any unjustified use of funds to solve problems.
Additionally, the Democrat MPs discussed the escalating unrest in the three southern border provinces. The party plans to submit a general motion next week demanding the government disclose clear strategies to resolve the situation.
Mr. Pongsakorn emphasized that the party wants Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to personally attend parliament to answer questions, rather than delegating this responsibility. This is because the government's previous policy statements only provided broad principles of "understand, reach out, develop." The government must clarify how it plans to end the ongoing violence. The party is coordinating with coalition opposition parties to submit live questions on this issue.
