Government Reports 35,739 Tax Evasion Cases with Fines Totaling 6.27 Billion Baht in Fiscal Year 2026

The government showcased results in cracking down on illegal excise goods over 11 months of fiscal year 2026, with 35,739 cases seized, representing a 5.84% increase from the same period last year. Total estimated fines reached 6.27 billion baht, a rise of 14.98%.

On 30 August 2026, Ms. Ploytale Laksameesangchan, Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that the government continues to strengthen measures to prevent and suppress illegal excise goods, following the directives of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul. Smuggling and sales of contraband cigarettes remain the most frequently detected illegal goods, causing significant damage to state revenues and negatively impacting lawful business operators.

Ms. Ploytale stated that through intensive efforts over 11 months of fiscal year 2026, the Excise Department of the Ministry of Finance successfully prosecuted 35,739 cases, up 5.84% from the same period last year. Total fines assessed and estimated amounted to 6.27 billion baht, an increase of 14.98%. Tobacco products remained the most common illegal goods found, followed by alcohol and fuel.

“The government, through the Excise Department, is advancing proactive data-driven enforcement by analyzing arrest records, geographical information, transport routes, data from public and private agencies, and public tips. This analysis helps plan operations to assess risks and apply measures tailored to the specific issues in each area. The approach shifts from a 'one-size-fits-all' policy to 'different areas, different risks, different measures' to align with the context and risk levels locally, aiming for stronger enforcement against illegal excise goods,” Ms. Ploytale said.
