Former Prime Minister Paethongtarn authorized a lawyer to file a complaint against a Facebook user for posting distorted content that may violate the Computer Crime Act. Suksit urged people not to use lies for political attacks without verification prior to sharing information. The tone is formal and the political context is clear.
On 1 Sep 2026 GMT+7, reporter sources said lawyer Sirawarit Suan-aran went to the Technology Crime Suppression Division (Cyber Police - TCCD) as authorized by Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, former Prime Minister, to file a complaint and pursue legal action against a Facebook account user.
This legal action follows the Facebook user posting messages or content that may constitute offenses under the Computer Crime Act and related violations.
Lawyer Sirawarit stated that this action is exercising legal rights to protect and preserve the rights, reputation, and fairness of his principal. He requested that all proceed according to legal procedures and asked police to investigate the facts and prosecute through the justice system.
“Suksit” rebutted the fake news and urged people not to use falsehoods for political attacks without verification.
Suksit Sri Chomkhwan, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs and spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, explained that the Facebook page posted images and text on 10 Aug 2026 GMT+7 containing false information claiming that the policy changed refugees into "owners" by purchasing and seizing land, supposedly with the UN’s help to divide territory and drive out original owners.
Suksit clarified this is malicious fake news. He emphasized that under Paethongtarn’s premiership, citizenship was granted to ethnic groups to end statelessness among ethnic communities long residing in Thailand, after strict eligibility checks.
The criteria were: 1. Ethnic groups historically residing continuously in Thailand and registered by authorities from earlier times; and 2. Their children born in Thailand, speaking Thai, recognized as Thai people living in border and mountainous regions across all areas—not foreigners of other nationalities or languages.
This policy has been praised by UNHCR as a success in humanitarian assistance and protection, positioning Thailand as a leader in resolving statelessness. It prevents exploitation by corrupt officials and allows easier tracking of applicants and sponsors, enabling investigations if errors occur.
He urged everyone to understand and distinguish between the policy ending statelessness of ethnic Thai people and strict prosecution of foreign criminals forging citizenship. He called to stop spreading false news for political attacks without verification, which causes social division and insults ethnic communities.
