The Minister of Foreign Affairs is preparing to fly to Malaysia to discuss southern border security and the expansion of the border fence.
On 2 Sep 2026, Mr. Sihasak Puangketkaew, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced plans to visit Malaysia on 6 Sep 2026 to discuss cooperation on security and resolving unrest in the southern border provinces, emphasizing collaboration on building and expanding the border fence for the benefit of both sides.
Mr. Sihasak stated that discussions will cover ways to manage insurgent groups operating across the border, those with warrants, and dual nationals. Malaysia has affirmed its intention not to support any actions undermining security and is ready to cooperate in developing the border area for the people of both countries. However, development cannot occur without prior security. Additionally, Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, chief of the Southern Border Peace Talk delegation, will be introduced to Malaysia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Security Council.
Regarding the situation in the three southern border provinces, Mr. Sihasak said he does not consider Malaysia involved but stressed that Thailand must urgently enhance timely intelligence sharing and coordination, especially as younger generations become involved. He highlighted the importance of integrated work, engaging local communities for understanding, and using government funds efficiently. He acknowledged that Thailand initiated the discussions, viewing Malaysia as a close neighbor always open to dialogue.
