Thai Sang Thai Party Urges Government to Resolve Student Loan Fund Crisis, Criticizes Prime Minister for Inaction

The Thai Sang Thai Party is pressing the government to fix the Student Loan Fund (กยศ.) financial crisis, revealing that in 2026 the fund has only 5.1 billion baht, insufficient for the 37 billion baht loan demand. It criticizes the Prime Minister for spending time singing while students sit and cry.

On 3 September 2026, Mr. Phuwapat Chanasakol, deputy spokesperson of the Thai Sang Thai Party, revealed he received complaints from student representatives facing problems obtaining Student Loan Fund money for further studies. The fund is currently severely illiquid, prompting a new quota allocation adjustment called the Waterfall Model.

The adjustment limits quotas by prioritizing “fields the country needs” (such as AI, electric vehicles, medicine) over “poverty.” This means the limited funds are fully allocated to specialized fields, causing genuinely poor students in general fields (like business administration, communication arts, education) to be denied loans outright.

Additionally, the fund redefined borrower status so that returning borrowers who change academic level or transfer schools are considered “new borrowers” and must undergo the entire screening process again. This problem causes over half of Thai students applying for loans to lose their quota, risking dropping out of education and forcing many families to borrow from informal lenders to pay tuition upfront.

“I urge the Prime Minister to intervene and urgently solve this issue for the youth. Education is a fundamental right, not something children should anxiously wait for daily. The country's leader must set correct priorities instead of wasting time playing the saxophone or singing for the media while students and parents nationwide are in tears over their fading futures.”
