The government is expediting relief for the Makkasan community after the fire, moving forward with the “Stable Homes Along the Railway” project to transform the land beside the tracks into an opportunity zone. The plan aims to start construction within one month to assist 25 households, turning the fire crisis into secure housing development.
On 3 Sep 2026, Captain Phatdarasmi Thongsaluaykrorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed that the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) is providing urgent aid to residents of the Makkasan community in Ratchathewi district, Bangkok, following a fire that broke out early on 1 Sep 2026. Approximately 15 houses were damaged, affecting 25 families totaling 97 individuals, with one fatality and one volunteer injured. The ministry is also fast-tracking long-term housing solutions through the “Stable Homes Along the Railway” project.
On 1 Sep 2026, Nikorn Somklang, Minister of MSDHS, assigned Chanin Rungthanakiat, Ministerial Advisor, along with MSDHS executives and the Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI), to visit the Makkasan community to assess damage, listen to residents’ concerns and needs, and coordinate efforts with Ratchathewi District Office and the State Railway of Thailand to expedite support for those affected.
Initially, MSDHS and CODI provided survival kits and an emergency housing development fund of 3,000 baht per household to alleviate immediate hardships. Households unable to return to their original homes will receive monthly housing subsidies while awaiting repairs and housing development under the Stable Homes project.
Meanwhile, agencies under MSDHS, including the Department of Women's Affairs and Family Development, Department of Children and Youth Affairs, and the HuSEC Public Welfare Acceleration Center via hotline 1300, have supplied essential goods and survival kits to victims. They are also coordinating welfare assistance tailored to each household’s needs to ensure continuous support.
For long-term solutions, MSDHS and CODI will rapidly advance the "Stable Homes Along the Railway" initiative under the program addressing housing issues of low-income communities affected by rail system development. Plans include developing housing for 91 Makkasan community households, with an accelerated process to start construction within one month, providing secure and safe homes for those impacted by the fire and land constraints from the State Railway of Thailand.
Captain Phatdarasmi stated that the government's assistance covers both urgent relief and long-term housing solutions. MSDHS and related agencies will work closely with the community to ensure aid reaches each household effectively and to create housing options suited to the community’s context.
“The fire caused loss and disrupted residents’ security, but aid must go beyond immediate relief. The government is accelerating efforts to build secure, safe housing, transforming the ‘land beside the railway’ into a ‘land of opportunity’ to provide residents with stable homes and improved quality of life,” said the Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office.
