On 5 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Suphanat Minchainan, MP for Bangkok from the People's Party, revealed an official letter dated 3 Oct 2024 GMT+7 sent to Anutin Charnvirakul, then Minister of Interior. The letter warned of impacts from the growth of Data Centers and recommended establishing legal regulations. However, after more than two years, the government neglected the matter, causing community problems and only responding reactively in a "locking the barn door after the horse is gone" manner.
Suphanat explained that the proposal from two years ago covered amendments to three major laws to prevent environmental and community impacts: the Building Control Act, defining Data Center clearly, setting safety standards for backup oil systems, and adjusting parking requirements to match actual use; the Urban Planning Act, specifying building types and zoning clearly to avoid disturbing residential areas; and the Environmental Act (EIA), requiring construction projects to conduct EIA reports according to their size and impact level.
He emphasized he does not oppose investment but wants the country to welcome investment with clear rules, creating a win-win outcome for all. Citizens can trust in safety, while investors gain clarity in regulations, avoiding under-the-table payments or risks of extortion complaints later.
