“Akranand” reveals Thailand’s PISA 2025 scores have improved and prepares Thai children to be media and AI literate without waiting until 2029, instructing the Ministry of Education to establish five key policies linked to raising PISA standards.
On 8 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Akranand Kankittinan, Deputy Minister of Education, assigned by Minister Prasert Chantrawongthong, chaired the press conference announcing the PISA 2025 results and delivering education quality enhancement policies. Dr. Thongchai Chiwprecha, Chair of the PISA Improvement Task Force, senior Ministry of Education executives, and representatives from relevant agencies attended at Prince Ballroom 3, Prince Palace Hotel, Bangkok.
Mr. Akranand expressed gratitude to the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), Ministry of Education, Office of Basic Education Commission, teachers, education personnel, and all stakeholders past and present for contributing to the increase in PISA 2025 scores. He stated that PISA results reflect a country’s long-term competitiveness since human resources are the foundation of national development. PISA 2025 is not the end but a starting point for advancing Thai children’s learning.
The Ministry of Education has formulated five core policies linked to improving PISA scores: restoring teacher time, overhauling budget inequalities, enhancing real-world learning, ensuring schools are safe spaces, and drafting a new National Education Act to establish a long-term educational framework as a national agenda.
The Deputy Minister added that in 2029 (B.E. 2572), the OECD will introduce an assessment of Media and AI Literacy for the first time to measure abilities to discern true from false information and to use AI tools with critical judgment and responsibility.
“The Ministry of Education will not wait until 2029 to prepare but will actively ready Thai children for Media and AI Literacy starting immediately. Analytical thinking, information discernment, and ethical AI use will be integrated into all subject teaching from primary education onward,” said Mr. Akranand.
For implementation, the Ministry will transform PISA insights into practical teaching guidelines for educators in classrooms across mathematics, science, reading, digital skills, and AI without adding teacher workload. These approaches will expand to primary levels and coordinate with teacher training institutions to prepare new teachers capable of fostering analytical thinking, problem-solving, and appropriate AI use.
Regarding PISA 2025 results, Thailand scored 432 in science, 407 in mathematics, and 392 in reading, all improved from PISA 2022. In computational problem-solving, Thailand scored 476, close to the OECD average of 500.
