Earth Pongsakorn led the Khlong Toei district councilors to inspect the site of an oil spill, urging the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Ministry of Energy to take three corrective actions: urgently send experts to investigate and pursue those responsible for punishment.
On 8 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesperson for the Democrat Party, together with Mr. Suchai Pongpianschob, Khlong Toei district councilor from the Democrat Party, conducted a field investigation into a massive oil spill on Chuea Phloeng Road in Khlong Toei. Mr. Pongsakorn stated that for the safety of residents in Khlong Toei, he urged the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and relevant agencies to urgently implement three measures to effectively and precisely address the issue: 1. Enhance warning systems and conduct comprehensive inspections of high-risk areas. Although the exact source of the oil spill is still unknown, reports indicate that last week residents near the oil depot in Yan Nawa district began detecting unusual odors. Therefore, the BMA should immediately instruct the districts involved—Khlong Toei, Phra Khanong, and Yan Nawa—to deploy officials promptly to inspect drainage systems around all oil depots to assess risks and alert the public to prevent potential harm.
2. Accelerate containment of oil spread within the drainage system. Once affected areas are identified, damage must be contained immediately. It is known that the BMA has attempted to block oil flow in Khlong Toei (from Chuea Phloeng Road to prevent spreading to Ranong intersection), which is a positive step. Additionally, if further complaints arise from other areas, the BMA must have contingency plans to promptly erect barriers to prevent wider contamination.
3. The Ministry of Energy must join investigations to decisively prosecute the offenders. The amount of oil recovered—over 10,000 liters—clearly indicates this is not a typical leak but originates from a large fuel storage facility, such as depots in Khlong Toei, Phra Khanong, or Yan Nawa districts.
We urge the Ministry of Energy to urgently dispatch experts to investigate the source before perpetrators can obstruct drainage or destroy evidence. If offenders are identified, legal action must be pursued thoroughly without exception to set a precedent and address the distress caused to citizens. Such a large volume of oil causes severe damage to the environment and public health. All relevant agencies must work swiftly to resolve the problem and hold those responsible accountable.
