Election Commission Files Charges Against 18 Nonthaburi Senate Candidates for Disqualification Including a Famous Lawyer

The Nonthaburi Election Commission filed a criminal complaint against 18 candidates for the Nonthaburi Senate elections for lacking qualifications but still running. Among them is a well-known lawyer who resigned from a political party less than five years ago.

At 11:00 a.m. on 11 September 2026, Ms. Chuleeporn Chanbaiphat, Director of the Nonthaburi Provincial Election Commission Office, assigned officials to file criminal complaints against 18 district-level Senate candidates lacking the qualifications to run. Among them was the well-known lawyer Mr. Kerdpol Kaewkerd.

Mr. Kerdpol was disqualified because he recently resigned from the Seri Ruam Thai Party before running for the district-level Senate seat. The election law requires Senate candidates to have resigned from their political party for at least five years. Upon verification, the Election Commission confirmed Mr. Kerdpol was indeed disqualified.

Subsequently, during its 46/2026 meeting on 19 May 2026, the Election Commission resolved to press criminal charges against Mr. Kerdpol, a candidate for the district-level Senate seat in Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province. The charges were filed under Section 74 combined with Section 14 (22) of the 2018 Organic Act on Senate Elections and Section 137 of the Criminal Code. The incident took place on 21 May 2024 at the Bang Bua Thong District Hall, the official venue for district-level Senate candidate registration.

After filing criminal charges against the group of district-level Senate candidates, officials found five disqualified candidates in Bang Bua Thong District, including Mr. Kerdpol. Nonthaburi Election Commission officials have since filed complaints against all 18 disqualified candidates at various police stations throughout Nonthaburi province.
