Finance Minister Discusses Framework to Regulate Data Centers with Prime Minister

"Akiniti" discussed with the Prime Minister the framework for regulating Data Centers, established subcommittees to work through detailed issues, and advocated raising electricity fees with the goal of using the funds to support the public.

On 11 September 2026, Akiniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, revealed after leading the Minister of Energy and the Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) in a meeting with the Prime Minister about setting investment standards for Data Centers in Thailand, that he had assigned all subcommittees to set minimum standards covering economic, social, and environmental aspects to be completed within this month. He also ordered the establishment of subcommittees to systematically oversee details in each area.

Economically, the focus will be on assessing cost-effectiveness and benefits to the country. Environmentally, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) standards will guide regulation. Infrastructure oversight will be under the Minister of Energy. Initially, Data Centers will be required to pay higher electricity rates to generate revenue that can be used to reduce electricity costs for the public. There may also be conditions requiring operators to invest in clean energy alongside their business operations. Additionally, a subcommittee will oversee site locations with an emphasis on safety to reorganize the entire system, after finding that Data Centers have been scattered in many locations and some have exploited BOI incentives in their operations.
