The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation highlights the success of KKUVOLT, building on over 10 years of Khon Kaen University's battery knowledge into real products, ranging from EV batteries and solar power systems to BESS energy storage, while developing a workforce to support the future energy industry.
On 14 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Captain Phatdarasmit Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government is pushing Thai research and innovation into practical use. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation aims to connect university knowledge with business and industry to create technologies and products that meet market needs while preparing manpower for new industries.
A clear example is KKUVOLT at Khon Kaen University, which has accumulated battery material knowledge for over 10 years before expanding from the lab to producing and selling real products, including INR 18650 battery cells, Mini Power Banks, Conversion Kits, batteries for electric motorcycles and golf carts, as well as custom batteries for solar systems and specialized equipment.
Currently, KKUVOLT has expanded into energy storage systems (BESS), including wall-mounted, mobile, and scalable models, suitable for households, small businesses, up to high-demand energy systems. They have developed Solar & BESS Solutions for homes to reduce electricity costs, enhance energy security, and support long-term clean energy use.
Another significant step is the development of sodium-ion or “salt batteries,” which have potential for energy storage systems and electric vehicles, offering new technology options and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
Professor Dr. Yossanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, visited Khon Kaen Province to tour the KKUVOLT modern battery and energy factory, monitoring technological progress and potential collaborations with the private sector to accelerate transferring university knowledge to the market.
Besides technology creation, Khon Kaen University is also focusing on human resource development by launching a battery and new energy academic program to produce specialized personnel with skills aligned to the future energy industry's needs.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office stated that supporting KKUVOLT reflects the government's and Ministry’s direction to move research “from the lab to the market” and produce tangible results, including clean energy alternatives, technologies for business sectors, consumer products, as well as new jobs and skills for Thai people, laying the foundation for the country’s new energy industry to grow based on Thai knowledge and innovation.
