On 18 September 2026, Mr. Akanat Promphan, Minister of Energy, spoke about the success of Thailand hosting Gastech 2026 in Bangkok from 14-17 September 2026. He said Thailand benefited not only in gas, electricity, or energy trading but also had the opportunity to open its doors for investors and global executives to experience Thailand's potential firsthand.
Gastech is one of the world's major energy industry events, typically rotating among the US, Europe, and Asia. The last time Thailand hosted was in 2008, before successfully bringing the event back to Bangkok this year.
Mr. Akanat stated that during the four days of hosting, many foreign investors and participants attended, resulting in business deals totaling no less than $20 billion. Equally important was having decision-makers worldwide come to see Thailand with their own eyes.
"We showcased the country, Bangkok, and our capabilities. When ministers, investors, and global company executives experience the atmosphere firsthand, they see that Thailand is not only an attractive investment destination but also a livable country offering balanced business, energy opportunities, and quality of life," Mr. Akanat said.
The Minister of Energy added that hosting such a global event gives Thailand a communication advantage, providing a platform to directly present the country’s vision and needs without having to travel abroad, as policymakers and global energy executives come to Bangkok to meet.
During the event, he chaired a roundtable discussion with executives from key energy organizations including IEF and IEA, as well as ministers and executives from the US, Russia, Singapore, neighboring countries, Africa, and other regions, offering Thailand the chance to communicate its energy direction and build direct networks.
Mr. Akanat noted that from an energy perspective, having many sellers and partners gathered in one place increases Thailand’s negotiation options, especially for long-term energy contracts, reducing risks from expensive spot market purchases and encouraging competition among suppliers.
"There are definite benefits regarding gas and electricity because we discussed long-term contracts to avoid costly spot market purchases, and multiple suppliers compete. But I see this as more than just numbers; this enhances the country's prestige," said Mr. Akanat.
The Minister emphasized that the gains from hosting should not be limited to energy trading figures. Investors experiencing the infrastructure, cities, services, and real living atmosphere gain long-term confidence in Thailand. "We let them experience the livability and investment appeal of the country, which I believe is invaluable," Mr. Akanat said.
Reporters noted that Gastech 2026 was held from 14-17 September 2026 at the BITEC Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, hosted by the Ministry of Energy. The event served as a platform connecting government leaders, energy executives, investors, and technology providers to discuss LNG security, AI-driven electricity demand, and long-term infrastructure investments. It attracted about 50,000 participants from 150 countries, over 1,000 executives and speakers, more than 1,000 leading companies exhibiting, energy ministers from 15 countries, and leaders from five international organizations.
Besides benefits to the energy industry and attracting direct investment, the event fostered business networking and generated income for tourism, retail, restaurants, and related sectors, providing an additional economic stimulus and enhancing Thailand’s image globally.
