Chadchart reveals the mystery behind the Khlong Toei oil leak is becoming clearer, suspecting the cause is soil subsidence beneath the highway pier causing pipe leakage.
On 18 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, visited the site to follow up on an oil leak in a drainage pipe along Chuea Phloeng Road in Khlong Toei District. He stated that after detecting continuous oil stains during drainage pipe cleaning last Wednesday, the BMA excavated the ground with the pipeline maintenance company and found oil seeping and dripping from the pipe beneath a highway pier. The BMA delayed public reporting to allow the Ministry of Energy to announce the situation. The oil pipe is reinforced with a steel sleeve, so no direct holes are visible. Preliminary assessment indicates the cause is uneven subsidence between the highway pier structure, supported by piles, and the pipe laid on the soil layer. Analysis suggesting the oil is old is believed to be due to long-term accumulation of small leaks mixed with other soil substances. The previously reported absence of leaks referred to a different pipe area.
For official technical information and confirmation of the cause, the BMA will have the Ministry of Energy provide the explanation. Meanwhile, BMA officials and related teams continue to monitor and facilitate safety measures on site to protect the public.
