Korn Monitors Two Major Funds Suspected of Money Laundering in Thai Capital Market

Korn posted an update on two issues involving Finansia and Bangchak shares, revealing names of ministers suspected of involvement with gray capital using the Thai capital market for money laundering.

On 18 September 2026, Korn Chatikavanich, party-list MP and deputy leader of the Democrat Party, posted on Facebook monitoring gray capital groups laundering money through the Thai capital market in two main cases: the Finansia shares linked to Voraphak Thanyawong, and the Bangchak group shares. In the latter case, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has declared it a special case. The Bangchak company board, chaired by former Finance Minister Pichai Chunhachirun during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, approved a capital increase sale to two funds linked to gray capital, including Ben Smith. They also approved the urgent purchase of Asia Link Terminal, owner of the Phetchaburi oil depot, for a high price of 9 billion baht from a seller company affiliated with the family of Somboon Sukcharoenkraisri, father of Phuwasit Chaiarunroj (Q), who was previously reported attempting to bribe Chaiyanok Chidchob and was arrested in 2022 for money laundering and online gambling offenses.

Korn stated that representatives of Bangchak minority shareholders have filed complaints to him as a member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee. He coordinated with the DSI, which accepted the case as special. However, he noted delays by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has yet to report progress on investigations into the rationale behind the capital increase sale to the gray capital group, or into disguised transactions involving tens of billions of baht in BCP shares bought by a fund with registered capital of only 50 million baht. Although the Anti-Money Laundering Office has seized assets and the DSI accepted the case as special, the SEC only reports that investigations are ongoing.
