The government is advancing the “Border Secure Housing” project, set to launch in 2027, piloting in five provinces to convert security land into housing and provide comprehensive care for injured soldiers.
On 19 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmit Thongsaluaykorn, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced the government's focus on strengthening border areas. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has coordinated with the Ministry of Defence to create an integrated security plan spanning five years from 2027 to 2031. In 2027, the pilot will cover 21 communities in five provinces: Sa Kaeo, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Buriram, and Sisaket. The initiative aims to address housing issues, poverty, and enhance safety for residents and personnel in these areas.
The project focuses on border province target groups by considering the use of land under security control for the “Border Secure Housing” development. The Community Organizations Development Institute (Public Organization), known as CODI, will be involved in planning, while military units will contribute labor for building, renovating homes, and improving infrastructure. This approach reduces residents’ expenses and transforms buffer zones into strong communities, eventually covering 752 communities in 26 border provinces.
Additionally, the government integrates data with the Veterans Welfare Organization to create assistance packages for poor veteran and ranger families. Support includes home renovations, livelihood funding for spouses, and health welfare, restoring dignity and security for these groups.
The project also includes rehabilitation for injured soldiers and vulnerable groups by applying innovations in disability care and Universal Design environmental adaptations to soldiers’ homes. It will provide psychological rehabilitation, vocational training suited to physical conditions, and care for bedridden elderly and disadvantaged children in border communities.
Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmit added that the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and the Ministry of Defence will soon form a joint working group to finalize plans, budgets, land use guidelines, and pilot areas. The plan will be presented to the Cabinet for approval to use security land effectively and to immediately proceed with cooperation between the two ministries.
